Vellore City is finally getting a major infrastructure upgrade. The Government of India has approved a 20.4-km four-lane bypass road of the town. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari shared this news on ‘X’, stating that Rs 753 crore has been sanctioned for the project.
For a long time, people in Vellore have been asking for a bypass to ease traffic congestion. Now, with this new project, that request is becoming a reality. The latest road will be built as a western ring road and is expected to reduce traffic pressure in the city.
This road construction will help drivers coming from Chittoor, Katpadi, V Kota, Latteri, and Vaniyambadi reach Adukkamparai Medical College Hospital, Arani, and Tiruvannamalai without going through Vellore City.
In addition, vehicles from Villupuram, Kalasapakkam, and Arani heading to Bengaluru, Chittoor, and Gudiyatham can now travel faster by avoiding the city. This will save time and fuel for many daily travelers.
At present, the road from Katpadi to Adukkamparai is narrow and crowded, especially as it enters old Vellore. Traffic gets worse during religious events like Girivalam. However, the new bypass is expected to cut travel time by 30 to 45 minutes.
Minister Gadkari also said that the land will be acquired with a width of 50 metres instead of the usual 30 metres. This extra space will allow the road to be expanded into six lanes in the future. Two-lane service roads will also be built on both sides, as per IRC guidelines.
Moreover, the road will have proper drainage and bridges to avoid the flooding problems that the region has faced in the past.
According to the plan, the bypass will start at Vandranthangal on NH 75 (earlier NH 234) and end at Sathumadhurai on NH 75, connecting with the Villupuram highway. It will also cross NH 48 at Poigai.
Meanwhile, the state highway department is also building a 3-km bypass from Kangeyanallur near VIT to Sathuvachari, which will further reduce local traffic.
With these projects, Vellore is set to get smoother and faster roads for everyone.
