The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to monetise the 32 km highway link through the toll-operate-transfer (TOT) model. This will happen once traffic volumes increase after the port becomes operational.The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will build the Rs 2,881 crore road link to Vadhvan port in Maharashtra under the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode. The road will be monetised later through the toll-operate-transfer (TOT) model as traffic volumes increase after the port's operation.What's The Decision?A decision was made during a meeting on December 9, chaired by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways. The meeting concluded that the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Toll model may not be feasible for the 32 km, 8-lane highway connecting NH 48 and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway to Vadhvan port. Traffic flow is expected to be low in the early stages, as the highway will be operational before the port starts functioning. The port is expected to begin operations in 2029-30, with no traffic until the first phase is complete.Traffic Monetisation Plan Through TOT ModelAn official, speaking on condition of anonymity, briefed on the meeting, “But, once the traffic flow builds up with the development of the port, the toll revenues can be monetised through the TOT (model).”The official also said,“NHAI will submit the proposal for approval of the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, to take up the project on EPC mode.”The meeting was informed that the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority is expected to complete land acquisition for the road and rail links to Vadhvan port by March 2025. NHAI has been directed to ensure the EPC contract for the highway project is awarded before March 2025. Work on the highway connectivity to Vadhvan port is expected to begin in May 2025.Rapid Progress on New Port Project“This is a big boost to the Vadhvan port project,” said Unmesh Wagh, Chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, which is leading the new port project.He further stated, “Now, the road link to the new port project will be ready in a year and facilitate the construction of the port apart from reducing time and cost.”. Built on the principles of forgiving highways, it will allow inward expansion for future development.The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will bring features rarely seen in Indian road infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, it will include a state-of-the-art traffic management system.A dedicated three-meter-wide utility corridor will be built to accommodate fiber optic cables, pipelines, and solar power systems. This scenic expressway will significantly reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai.Spanning 262 kilometers, the expressway will pass through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. It is designed for a speed limit of 120 km/h, ensuring faster and smoother travel.The project is being constructed at a cost of over Rs 17,000 crore. The completion timeline is set for August 2025.Currently, a 71-kilometer stretch of the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is open to the public, offering a glimpse of the modern infrastructure.3. Dwarka ExpresswayThe Dwarka Expressway is a significant addition to India’s road infrastructure. Spanning 29 kilometers, it covers 18.9 km in Haryana and 10.1 km in Delhi.The expressway begins at Shiv Murti on National Highway 8 and ends near the Kherki Daula toll plaza. It will provide a seamless commuting option for travelers between Gurgaon and Delhi, improving connectivity near IGI Airport.This will be India’s first elevated eight-lane access-controlled expressway. It will feature tunnels, underpasses, flyovers, and elevated structures.A unique highlight is the 34-meter-wide elevated road spanning 9 kilometers, supported by single pillars. The expressway is set to redefine modern road travel.The Dwarka Expressway project is estimated to cost Rs 9,000 crore. It is divided into four segments: two in Delhi (10.01 km) and two in Haryana (18.9 km).The investment breakdown is as follows: Rs 2,507 crore for the first phase in Delhi, Rs 2,068 crore for the second phase, Rs 2,228 crore for the third phase, and Rs 1,859 crore for the fourth phase.This phased approach ensures a structured development of the expressway, aimed at improving connectivity between Delhi and Haryana.4. Ganga ExpresswayThe Ganga Expressway will span 600 kilometers, connecting Meerut to Prayagraj. It will pass through key districts like Amroha, Bulandshahr, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Pratapgarh.The project is estimated to cost Rs 36,000 crore.The expressway will link 518 villages across 12 districts, connecting eastern and western Uttar Pradesh. It will drastically reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj.Initially designed as a six-lane roadway, the expressway will be expandable to eight lanes. It will support a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour.Earlier this year, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) to speed up the construction.
