The Tamil Nadu government is working quickly to solve Chennai’s traffic problems with a big new project — the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road. This road will be the first 10-lane expressway in the state and is being built at a cost of Rs 12,301 crore. The 132.87 km-long road is expected to open for use by January 2026.
The expressway has been renamed as the Chennai Border Road. It will stretch from Mamallapuram to Kattupalli Port, with a wide 196-foot layout. The road will have six main lanes and two service lanes on both sides, making it a 10-lane road in total.
Vehicles can travel at high speeds of up to 120 kmph on the main lanes. Two-wheelers will only be allowed on the service lanes, making travel safer for everyone.
In the first phase, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is supporting the project with a loan of 40,074 million yen (Rs 2,673 crore). This phase will cover a 25.31-km stretch from Ennore Port to Thachur. The Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) is in charge of the project and is using the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model for faster work.
The Peripheral Ring Road will connect several important industrial and trade zones such as Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Thiruvallur, Thamaraipakkam, Periypalayam, Puduvayal, and Kattupalli.
Big port operators like Ennore Kamarajar Port, Kattupalli Adani, and L&T are hoping for the project to finish early. This is because the expressway will make freight movement faster and smoother, and reduce traffic jams inside the city.
In addition to quicker travel, the road is expected to lower pollution levels. With less time spent in traffic, commercial vehicles will produce fewer emissions. The new road will also support other road projects in the region like the 100-foot road between Guindy Kathipara and Manali and the Chennai Bypass roads between Iruliyur-Puzhal and Vandalur-Meenjur.
Overall, the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road is set to bring better travel, cleaner air, and stronger connections for the people of Tamil Nadu.
