The Government of India has approved a new expressway to improve road connectivity in the North East. This 166.80 km long and 4-lane expressway will run from Shillong in Meghalaya to Silchar in Assam. The project will cost ₹22,864 crore and will be built under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
This big decision was taken during a Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode and aims to improve travel, transport, and trade in the region.
Out of the total length, 144.80 km will be in Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam. It will be a part of National Highway 06 and start from Mawlyngkhung near Shillong. It will end at Panchgram near Silchar. This stretch will pass through green hills, forests, and beautiful tourist spots, making the journey both fast and enjoyable.
In addition to providing a better travel experience, the expressway will also connect to major highways like NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37. This will help improve inter-city travel between Shillong, Guwahati, and Silchar.
Once completed, this new road will make it easier for people to travel between Guwahati and Silchar. It will also reduce travel time and help improve logistics. Moreover, it will offer smoother road transport to important states in the region like Manipur, Tripura, and Mizoram.
The new expressway will reduce traffic load on the existing NH-06. As a result, people will face fewer traffic jams and will be able to reach their destinations faster and more comfortably.
This road will also support tourism. Many tourists visit Meghalaya and Assam every year, and this expressway will make travel easier for them. In fact, it will connect better to airports in Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar, allowing both domestic and international tourists to explore more of the North East.
In addition, the road will benefit local industries. Areas rich in coal and cement production in Meghalaya will now have better access to markets, helping businesses grow.
This project is not just about road construction—it is a step forward in the direction of development. It will create new jobs in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur. People in these states will benefit from more work opportunities and improved transport systems.
Perhaps most importantly, this expressway will support the government’s goal of building a self-reliant and well-connected India.
