The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded a ₹5,730 crore contract for the construction of the long-awaited 121-km Guwahati Ring Road. This critical infrastructure project is expected to ease traffic congestion in Guwahati and improve regional connectivity across Assam and the Northeast.
The contract has been awarded to Infracon Pvt Ltd under the DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer) model, featuring a 30-year concession period that includes four years for construction.
The Guwahati Ring Road project will be developed in three segments:
This design aims to divert freight and inter-state traffic away from city roads, thereby enhancing vehicular movement and urban mobility within Guwahati.
The ring road is expected to significantly decongest city traffic, reduce air and noise pollution, and improve the logistics ecosystem across the Northeast.
This project aligns with the Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on integrated and efficient transport networks. It is also seen as a boost to multimodal connectivity and enhanced access to regional markets.
An NHAI spokesperson remarked, “The Guwahati Ring Road is not just a road project, but a regional transformation initiative. Once completed, it will open up faster trade routes and facilitate economic growth in Assam and the entire Northeast corridor.”
They further added, “We are committed to completing this project within the stipulated timeframe, ensuring top-tier engineering quality and sustainable development practices.”
The awarding of this project marks a significant step in Assam’s infrastructure journey. With reduced congestion and improved road quality, the region is poised for increased industrial activity and better interstate connectivity.
As work begins after the 2025 monsoon season, the Guwahati Ring Road is expected to redefine transportation efficiency and regional development across the Northeast.
