The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded a ₹57.30 billion contract for the long-awaited 121-kilometre Guwahati Ring Road project in Assam. Infracon, which secured the contract, stated that the project aims to decongest traffic in Guwahati while improving transport connectivity within Assam and neighbouring states.
Awarded under the DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Transfer) model, the project comes with a 30-year concession period, including four years allocated for construction. NHAI has planned to commence construction after the 2025 monsoon season.
The Guwahati Ring Road project is a major step towards reducing urban congestion by diverting freight and interstate traffic away from city roads. The initiative is expected to enhance urban mobility and relieve the burden on Guwahati’s core transportation network.
Officials highlighted that the project would significantly curb air and noise pollution, while improving overall traffic flow and logistics movement across the Northeast.
The project supports the broader vision of the Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrated infrastructure development and enhanced multimodal connectivity.
By linking critical routes and industrial hubs, the Guwahati Ring Road will boost regional efficiency and stimulate local economies. This infrastructure boost is anticipated to serve as a key enabler for development across Assam and its neighbouring states.
An NHAI spokesperson said, “This is not just a road construction project — it is a regional transformation initiative. The Guwahati Ring Road will unlock new trade corridors, support regional development, and enhance economic activity throughout the Northeast.”
The official reaffirmed NHAI's dedication to maintaining high construction standards and prioritizing sustainability. “We are committed to delivering this project on time with the highest levels of quality and environmental consideration,” the spokesperson added.
With its strategic focus on decongesting urban zones and building future-ready infrastructure, the Guwahati Ring Road project is set to become a vital backbone for transportation in Northeast India. As the region prepares for increased trade, travel, and industrial activity, this development will serve as a catalyst for long-term economic transformation.
