To tackle the growing traffic congestion in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), the Central Government has approved two major highway projects estimated at a total cost of ₹10,000 crore. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting between Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
These new highway corridors are designed to reduce the burden on arterial city roads and national highways, offering alternate routes for both passenger and freight movement across the region.
This project will serve as a strategic bypass, providing direct and faster connectivity for traffic originating from Haryana and Rajasthan heading toward Dehradun.
According to officials, “Bids for hiring a consultant are under evaluation and the DPR (Detailed Project Report) is expected to be awarded by mid-June 2025.”
This highway will enhance direct connectivity between North and Southwest Delhi and NCR cities such as Loni, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Faridabad, easing pressure on city centers like Sarai Kale Khan and Kalindi Kunj.
Government sources confirmed, “The highway will serve as an alternate corridor for both intercity passenger and freight traffic, decongesting internal roads and critical city junctions.”
In a step toward sustainable construction, the NHAI has utilized over 10 lakh metric tons of inert waste material sourced from biomining activities at Delhi’s landfill sites. This material is already being used in the construction of UER 2.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “A total of ₹1.25 lakh crore worth of decongestion projects have been initiated by the Centre in Delhi. These projects, including the two highways, will be fully executed by NHAI with PWD’s cooperation. Our focus is on reducing urban stress and enhancing regional accessibility.”
These newly approved projects are part of a broader plan to modernize the transportation framework in and around Delhi. By integrating existing expressways and introducing alternate routes for freight and commuter movement, the capital region is set to witness a substantial reduction in travel time and vehicular pressure on its core roads.
With the groundwork set for DPR preparation and upcoming tenders, these highways signal the beginning of a new era in infrastructure-led urban decongestion and regional development.
