Kolkata's Mayor, Firhad Hakim, wants to fix the city's bumpy roads by using recycled plastic in road construction. On Friday, he shared his own experience of rough drives on several roads, which affected his health. To solve this issue, he instructed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) roads department to use recycled plastic as one of the materials for road repairs.
To make this plan work, the Mayor also directed the civic body's solid waste management department to supply plastic granules regularly to the roads department. These granules come from a recycling plant at Dhapa. Ensuring a steady supply is important so that road repairs do not face delays due to a lack of material.
The idea of using recycled plastic for roads is not new for Kolkata. Earlier, KMC used plastic waste to repair small lanes and fringe roads. After seeing positive results, the civic body decided to try this method on major and arterial roads as well. According to KMC officials, a pilot project on Bakshibagan Road in Behala showed promising results. The plastic hot mix used on that stretch was able to withstand rain, heat, and cold effectively..
One of the main benefits of using plastic in roads is that it helps prevent water seepage, which often damages them. Since plastic does not absorb water, roads are expected to last longer and remain smoother.
Following the success of the pilot project, KMC now plans to extend this method to other major roads in Kolkata. In the next phase, roads like Chittaranjan Avenue, APC Roy Road, Bidhan Sarani, Bowbazar Street, College Street, and Lenin Sarani will also be repaired using recycled plastic.
In fact, many major roads in South Kolkata, such as Rashbehari Avenue, Gariahat Road, Gurusaday Dutta Road, and Motilal Gupta Road, have already been restored using this method. The use of plastic in road construction not only helps in recycling waste but also makes the roads more durable.
As Kolkata moves forward with this plan, it could set an example for other cities to adopt similar eco-friendly methods for road construction.
