After a decade-long wait, the long-awaited construction of the Khair bypass on the Aligarh–Palwal Highway has finally started. The work has commenced on the stretch from Somna Marg to village Zarara. This development, led by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aims to eliminate hours-long traffic congestion in Khair and Jattari towns, enhancing the overall flow of transportation.
The 67-kilometre-long Aligarh–Palwal Highway, constructed at a cost of ₹552 crore by the Public Works Department (PWD), connects Aligarh to Palwal in Haryana. It intersects the Yamuna Expressway near Tappal, thereby linking Aligarh with Noida, NCR, Mathura, and Agra.
Due to the absence of bypasses at Khair and Jattari, the highway has been facing consistent traffic snarls, leading to public demand for bypass development for years.
Several key developments are being executed along this corridor, including:
With the Khair-Jattari bypass, these areas will see smoother travel and enhanced accessibility. This is expected to fast-track local business, logistics, and economic development.
The primary reason for the delay in the bypass project was the jurisdictional dispute between the PWD and NHAI. While the highway was constructed by the PWD, it was later handed over to NHAI, leading to confusion over project responsibilities.
Recently, NHAI took the lead, prepared the project proposal, and received the DPR approval from the state government. With bureaucratic hurdles cleared, the groundwork is finally underway.
Indrajeet Singh, Project Director, NHAI, commented, “The long-awaited Khair bypass construction has commenced. Our priority is to complete it within the stipulated timeline. Modern construction techniques are being used to accelerate progress and maintain quality standards."
The bypass is poised to transform transportation in the Khair–Jattari stretch. By eliminating bottlenecks and easing traffic flow, the project will not only reduce travel time but also boost connectivity to major economic zones. As infrastructure aligns with regional development plans, this bypass marks a critical step towards building a more efficient and accessible Aligarh.
