Indian automakers have received a three-month extension to comply with stricter safety standards for electric construction equipment. Originally set to take effect on October 1, the revised deadline is now January 1, 2025.
The updated safety norms aim to protect workers on construction sites and ensure public safety. The government is introducing these safety standards to support the growing electric construction equipment market. Major companies are now deploying electric dumpers, earth-moving machines, and other advanced vehicles in this sector.
The rules issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways necessitate compliance with Automotive Industry Standards (AIS)-174. It mainly covers important areas such as battery safety, electrical systems, and charging infrastructure.
Sector experts highlight that AIS-174 will prioritize operator and pedestrian safety on construction sites. Additionally, manufacturers must invest significantly in design and technology to meet these requirements.
The extension comes after manufacturers faced challenges in aligning with the stringent standards within the initial timeline. By granting more time, the government seeks to balance industry preparedness with the need for robust safety measures.
The draft rules, published in August 2024, did not receive any objections or suggestions from stakeholders. This allowed the amendment to proceed without changes.
This announcement is in line with the aim of the government, which makes construction equipment safer and more sustainable. Now that the industry is one day closer to electrified machinery, these standards will be shaping a safer, greener future.
The cut-off date for manufacturers' conforming fully to the new safety standards and AIS-174, meanwhile, is January 2025. It marks a significant step toward better safety and sustainability for construction equipment.
