India's most ambitious highway project, the Bharatmala Pariyojana, is moving forward with impressive results. Out of the total 26,425 km of awarded road projects, 20,770 km have already been completed. This update was shared by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in the Rajya Sabha on July 23.
The Bharatmala Pariyojana was launched in 2017 to improve road connectivity, cut transport costs, and support India’s growing economy. In total, the government plans to build 34,800 km of roads across the country under this project.
So far, projects worth around Rs 8.54 lakh crore have been awarded. Out of the awarded 26,425 km, 2,967 km were completed just in the current financial year 2024-25.
These projects include different types of roads like:

In response, the government has taken several steps to fix these problems. For example:
Lastly, the Bharatmala Pariyojana is building the road to a stronger India. While there are some delays, the overall pace is steady, and the government is working to solve the problems quickly. With over 20,000 km already done, the journey ahead looks promising.
