The Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway will reduce travel time between the two cities from 26 hours to 13 hours. Spanning 1,316 km, the corridor will connect Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat. It will also link 15 major cities across the four states.
Developed under the Bharatmala project, the ₹80,000-crore project is a 6-lane greenfield economic corridor and is India’s second-longest expressway. The expressway is expected to strengthen connectivity between northern India and the western coast. It is also expected to support trade between the four states.
Amritsar and Jamnagar are currently connected by around 1,430 km of road. Once the new route is ready, the distance will reduce to 1,316 km.
Heavy traffic on the existing two-lane route can push travel time to 26 hours. Six lanes on the new corridor will bring that journey down to 13 hours.
Starting near Tibba village in Punjab’s Kapurthala district, the alignment will terminate near Jamnagar’s refinery complex.
The corridor will pass through major locations in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Rajasthan accounts for around 637 km of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway. Work on this section is progressing rapidly. The highway between Hanumangarh and Jalore has been fully opened. Around 85% to 90% of the overall expressway work has been completed.
Finishing work is underway in parts of Punjab and Gujarat. The entire corridor is planned to open in December 2026.
The expressway will improve connectivity between Punjab and Gujarat. Punjab’s agricultural sector is expected to gain stronger access to Gujarat’s port ecosystem. The project is also expected to strengthen connectivity between Haryana and Rajasthan. It will provide a direct road link across four states.
The corridor is therefore expected to improve connectivity and trade movement across northern and western India.
