The Union Cabinet has given the green signal to build a six-lane Zirakpur bypass and ring road around Chandigarh. This new project aims to ease traffic in some of the busiest areas in North India. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this news during a public event, highlighting it as a key part of the Narendra Modi government’s third-term development plans.
The Zirakpur bypass will be around 19.2 km long. It will start at NH-7 near Zirakpur-Patiala and end at NH-5 near Zirakpur-Parwanoo in Panchkula, Haryana. The aim is to create a ring road around Chandigarh, covering Mohali, Zirakpur, and Panchkula.
This bypass will provide smooth and signal-free travel from the Chandimandir Western Command headquarters to Chandigarh Airport. In addition, it will help reduce traffic jams in the Zirakpur area, which currently faces heavy traffic because it lies at the meeting point of two busy highways.
The project will cost around ₹1,878 crore and is part of the PM Gatishakti master plan. This plan focuses on better and faster infrastructure development across the country.
A few special features of the project include:
The bypass is expected to help thousands of daily travellers and reduce pollution by cutting down traffic congestion. Diverting vehicles away from city roads will especially help vehicles going to Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Patiala.
Currently, people traveling through Zirakpur often face long delays. However, with this bypass, travel time will go down, and people will experience smoother journeys.
The Zirakpur bypass will be built using a public-private partnership model under the hybrid annuity mode (HAM). This means the government and private companies will collaborate to complete the project.
In short, the new bypass is a big step toward solving the traffic problems of Zirakpur, Panchkula, and Mohali. The Union Government said it is committed to improving road networks in fast-growing urban areas. This project is just the beginning of many more to come under the PM Gatishakti master plan.
