In a landmark decision to bolster infrastructure in Northeast India, the Union Cabinet has approved the development of a greenfield high-speed corridor connecting Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam. With an estimated investment of ₹22,864 crore, this 166.80 km access-controlled highway aims to significantly enhance regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and catalyze economic development.
The four-lane expressway, spanning 144.80 km in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam, will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM)—a model combining government funding with private sector investment.
This greenfield project is part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, ensuring seamless integration with other major highways, including NH-27 and NH-106. By aligning with this master plan, the corridor is expected to streamline passenger and freight movement, enabling faster logistics and smoother inter-state travel.
The expressway will serve as a major infrastructure boost for:
While formal statements are awaited, officials highlight that this corridor represents a transformational infrastructure move, unlocking new economic zones and fostering inclusive growth in one of India’s most ecologically and strategically significant regions.
The Mawlyngkhung–Panchgram corridor marks a critical step in redefining infrastructure standards across the Northeast. It is expected to decongest existing routes, improve safety, lower emissions, and pave the way for future investments in tourism, logistics, and manufacturing.
