Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ordered the State Finance Department to make available ₹1,000 crore for rural road construction. ₹150 crore would be released monthly till June this year, the Chief Minister's officer said in a press release.
On Friday evening, the Chief Minister held a review meeting with the R&B and Panchayati Raj departments at the Secretariat. He told the departments that there was a need to upgrade rural roads. He said the dimensions of single-lane and double-lane roads were hitherto measured in terms of bullock cart movement, bicycles, and motorcycles.
However, more cars, tractors, and four-wheelers are now using these roads, even in remote villages. As a result, the road dimensions need to be upgraded to accommodate the increased vehicular traffic. The Chief Minister said the roads should have free movement for vehicles without obstruction.
He also discussed that while many Tandas and Gudems have been upgraded to Panchayats, the construction of roads and panchayat school buildings in these areas has been neglected. The Chief Minister instructed that every Panchayat in the state must have a BT (bitumen-topped) road. No Panchayat should be left without one.
The CM also proposed creating a unified road network. Single-lane roads should connect villages and mandals, while double-lane roads should link mandals to district headquarters. He also emphasized that potholes in rural roads must be repaired immediately.
The Chief Minister pointed out inconsistencies in the construction standards of Panchayat Raj and R&B roads. He ordered that roads under both departments be built to the same quality standards. He said motorists do not differentiate between these roads but only care about their travel experience. Additionally, the CM suggested developing a road network even for villages located in forested areas to ensure connectivity for all.
