The long-awaited Samruddhi Expressway is now fully open to the public. This high-speed road connects Mumbai to Nagpur, covering a total distance of 701 km. With the final stretch between Igatpuri and Amane now operational, travel time between the two major cities has been reduced to just 8 hours.
The last 76-km section was built at a cost of ₹1,182 crore. It was jointly funded by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This section introduces three important interchanges at Igatpuri, Kutghar (Shahapur), and Amane (Thane), which will facilitate the smooth movement of commercial vehicles.
In addition, this section includes India’s longest road tunnel—7.8 km long—passing through the Kasara Ghat. Earlier, drivers had to drive up winding ghat roads and climb 450 metres in height. Now, with the tunnel and better alignment, the elevation is only 160 metres. As a result, travel time between Igatpuri and Amane has come down from 90 minutes to just 40 minutes.
With this final construction completed, the entire expressway is now in use. It allows heavy commercial vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 150 kmph, cutting the earlier 16-hour Mumbai–Nagpur journey in half.
The expressway includes:
All these features make the route safer and faster for both personal and goods transport.
The expressway, also known as the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, was first envisioned by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. It aims to improve transport, promote growth, and connect more parts of the state.
It goes through 10 districts and links 390 villages. This means better access to markets, jobs, and healthcare, especially for people living in rural and semi-urban areas.
Despite early challenges with land acquisition, the project moved forward in phases:
Now, with the final section open, the full expressway is complete and ready to support Maharashtra’s growth.
