Pune Metro Phase-2 Approved: City Gears Up for Faster Commute

Two New Corridors to Boost Pune’s East-West Metro Connectivity and Ease Daily Commute

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. This new development aims to boost east-west travel in Pune by extending the current Vanaz–Ramwadi Line with two new corridors.

New Corridors to Ease Traffic in Pune

The newly approved corridors include Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B). These will add a total length of 12.75 km and include 13 elevated metro stations across key locations like Kothrud, Bavdhan, Kharadi, Chandani Chowk, and Wagholi.

This expansion is expected to reduce travel time, support daily commuters, and provide better public transport to thousands of residents in Pune's growing suburbs.

Project Cost and Completion Timeline

The total cost of Pune Metro Phase-2 is estimated to be ₹3626.24 crore. This will be jointly funded by the central government, the Maharashtra state government, and international financial agencies through loans. The project is expected to be completed in the next four years.

Speaking on the project approval, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Pune is developing fast in every sector and playing an important role in India's economy. The metro expansion will not only improve transport but also make life easier for the people.”

Maha-Metro Begins Pre-Construction Work

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will implement the project. Officials confirmed that survey and design work has already started.

Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha-Metro, stated,“These two new metro corridors will connect Pune’s east and west regions more effectively. Thousands of people will benefit from the improved metro service.”

With metro work set to begin soon, the demand for machines, materials, and truck that relate to infrastructure will increase. This will also support local jobs and boost the construction sector in Pune.

The new phase is not just a transport upgrade—it’s a step towards a smarter and faster Pune.
