The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced a ₹3,000-crore road construction project to reduce traffic and improve connectivity in Pune. This new network will directly link Satara Road, Ahilyanagar Road, Solapur highway, Nashik highway, and the Pune-Mumbai highway.
Officials say the project will also improve road access to nearby villages and fast-growing townships. Once complete, this network will help ease congestion in the city’s busy areas and give better travel options for daily commuters.
PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase said the aim is to connect all major highways through strong and safe roads. “We have identified the connecting roads and will carry out the work in different phases,” he said.
A senior PMRDA official said that work is already happening in 25 villages. Most roads will be built using cement concrete for better quality. Each road will have stormwater drains and underground utility ducts to stop digging in the future.
The road grid will act as alternate routes, reducing traffic on Pune’s main roads. This will cut travel time for both local people and heavy vehicles like trucks entering and leaving the city.
The road widths are planned to handle future traffic needs. Technical surveys and utility shifting are also being done together to save time.
PMRDA is also reviewing a request to shift the proposed inner ring road in some places to avoid affecting village homes. The ₹14,200-crore inner ring road will connect key places like Lohegaon airport and Hinjewadi IT Park.
