Patna has taken a major leap in infrastructure development with the inauguration of Bihar’s first double decker elevated road on Ashok Rajpath. The newly built flyover was officially opened on June 11 by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, marking a historic moment for the state capital. Developed at an approximate cost of ₹422 crore, the elevated structure is designed to ease traffic congestion, streamline connectivity, and boost urban mobility in one of Patna’s busiest corridors.
The double decker flyover comprises two independent levels:
Both decks feature two-lane roads, optimizing traffic flow and reducing the load on the ground-level routes. A service road beneath the flyover has been constructed to ensure uninterrupted local movement and accessibility for residents and businesses.
The project promises significant improvements in urban mobility. Commuters heading to Patna Medical College (PMCH), NIT Patna, Science College, and Patna University will experience smoother and faster travel. The new flyover will especially benefit daily commuters and students who have long struggled with bottlenecks and delays in the Ashok Rajpath area.
Furthermore, the road is expected to drastically cut down travel time from Gandhi Maidan to NIT More, which was previously plagued by frequent traffic jams.
One of the most notable advantages of the flyover is its integration with the Patna Metro project. Together, these two large-scale developments are poised to redefine the public transport ecosystem in Patna. The connectivity between metro and road transport will offer commuters greater convenience and reduce dependence on private vehicles, easing traffic volume in the long term.
Apart from improving transportation, the double decker flyover is also paving the way for economic development. Government plans include setting up retail shops below the flyover, which is expected to generate local employment opportunities and promote small business activity.
Enhanced infrastructure will also help traders operating near Khaitan Market, Patna Market, and surrounding areas, who previously suffered due to frequent traffic snarls. Improved connectivity can now lead to smoother supply chains and increased footfall.
To further support commercial activity and reduce parking-related challenges, the project includes provisions for multi-level parking zones near key flyover access points. This will cater to the needs of businesses, shoppers, and daily office-goers, ensuring better traffic management in the surrounding areas.
The successful completion of this iconic structure adds to the city’s identity as a growing urban hub. With other important flyovers like JP Ganga Path, Chiryatand Flyover, and Mithapur Flyover already in place, Patna is rapidly developing a strong road infrastructure network.
This double decker elevated road is also a first-of-its-kind in Bihar, which reinforces the state’s commitment to modern infrastructure development and future-ready cities.
Shirsat Kapil Ashok, Managing Director, Bihar State Road Development Corporation, stated, “The department is always prompt in executing the state’s infrastructure plans. The success of the Ashok Rajpath double decker flyover has encouraged the government to plan similar projects on other major roads to further improve connectivity across Bihar.”
Other government officials present during the inauguration included urban planning heads, construction secretaries, and public works engineers, who collectively emphasized the project’s role in decongesting the city and setting new standards in road design.
Following the success of this project, plans are in motion to construct more double decker flyovers on key arterial roads across Bihar. The goal is to expand the scope of high-capacity urban transit infrastructure, especially in regions suffering from outdated road networks and rapid population growth.
The inauguration of Patna’s first double decker elevated road marks a significant stride in Bihar’s infrastructure growth story. More than just a flyover, it represents a modern solution to legacy traffic issues, designed with a forward-looking urban mobility strategy. The new elevated road will also ease movement of trucks and commercial vehicles, improving last-mile delivery and reducing transit delays for local businesses. As the state government prepares to roll out similar projects, Patna is quickly emerging as a city aligned with smart, sustainable, and commuter-centric development.
