Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has set an ambitious target to accelerate highway construction in India to 100 kilometres per day. Speaking at a public event in New Delhi, Gadkari highlighted that infrastructure development is crucial for India’s economic growth and global competitiveness.
He also made a bold statement that in the next 18 months, India’s road infrastructure will be better than that of the United States of America.
Over the past five years, India has seen consistent development in road construction. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways achieved a record pace of 37 km per day in the financial year 2020–21.
Here’s a quick look at the highway construction progress:
"Infrastructure development is very important for India... I am working to accelerate the pace of highway construction in the country to 100 km per day," said Gadkari.
He further emphasized that funding will not be a hurdle in executing these projects. “There is no dearth of money for the highways projects,” he added, reassuring stakeholders and the public.
Apart from the nationwide plans, Gadkari also revealed that the Union government is currently working on infrastructure projects worth ₹1 lakh crore to transform the capital city, Delhi. These projects aim to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and uplift the city's transportation landscape.
With these bold initiatives, India is set on a transformative path toward becoming a global leader in infrastructure. Gadkari’s vision reflects a determined push towards fast, modern, and sustainable road development. As the government channels significant investments and implements strategic planning, the nation’s highway network is expected to redefine connectivity and mobility for years to come.
