The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has initiated a feasibility study for the proposed 103-km six-lane expressway connecting Nashik to the Vadhavan port in Palghar district. The study is expected to take over two months, determining the route and land requirements. The project aims to enhance connectivity to the greenfield deep-sea port at Vadhavan, which is being developed at a cost of over ₹76,200 crore.
Similar to the 7.7-km tunnel between Igatpuri and Kasara on the Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Nashik-Vadhavan Expressway will have multiple tunnels to cut through the hilly terrain of the Western Ghats. These tunnels will enhance connectivity and reduce travel time. The length of the tunnels will be finalized once the project’s blueprint is ready.
The ongoing feasibility study will determine the expressway’s route, followed by a Detailed Project Report (DPR) that will take approximately six months to complete. Once approved, MSRDC will invite bids for the construction work.
An MSRDC official stated, “Like the Samruddhi Mahamarg tunnel, Nashik-Vadhavan Expressway will have similar tunnels to improve connectivity. The feasibility study will determine the exact specifications and land acquisition requirements.”
Once operational, the expressway will position Nashik as a key economic hub in Maharashtra. Many containers from North Maharashtra and Vidarbha are expected to use Vadhavan port over JNPT, increasing trade efficiency. The improved road connectivity is also likely to attract new investments in the region.
The Nashik-Vadhavan Expressway aligns with Maharashtra’s broader infrastructure development plans. The state government aims to optimize costs while ensuring rapid execution of the project, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing transport networks and economic growth.
