Nashik: Travel time between Nashik and Mumbai has increased by around two hours due to ongoing work on the Mumbai-Agra highway. The construction work on various stretches of the highway has led to traffic diversions. Vehicles are now using an adjacent section of the road. As a result, between Nashik and Igatpuri, one side of the road is now handling two-way traffic. This diversion has caused significant delays, making the journey longer for commuters.
Abhay Kulkarni, a member of the Nashik First organization, regularly travels between Nashik and Mumbai. He mentioned that the condition of the highway is pathetic. He also said, “Right from Nashik to Thane, there is some kind of work going on everywhere. The situation, however, has improved a little since monsoon when the highway was riddled with potholes from Nashik to Thane.”
Commuters have reported that the usual three-hour journey between Nashik and Mumbai is now taking at least five hours. On some days, the travel time extends to over six hours. Many travelers have expressed concern, stating that there is no system in place by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure motorists stay in their lanes. As a result, they fear that a major accident could occur at any time.
Rajendra Phad, a member of the Nashik Transport Association, said, “There is a need to deploy traffic personnel or wardens at different locations where the work is on. With no median in place, if a motorist goes into the other lane to cover the distance fast and there are other vehicles on the opposite lane as well, the road gets blocked. This traffic block continues for an hour or two hours on most occasions."
He further mentioned, “We would write to the NHAI and the other authorities for deployment of police and traffic wardens."
Mahesh Chandole, who recently traveled to Igatpuri, said that having police personnel stationed at certain sections could help manage traffic jams. He emphasized that their presence would improve traffic flow in these congested areas.
An NHAI official stated, “While commuters may face some problems now, once the work is over, travel will be smooth across the 60-km stretch from Pimpalgaon to Gonde, where the work of putting a concrete layer is underway. The work is also underway till Igatpuri. The work will be over within the next few months."
