The construction of the 92 km Mysuru-Kushalnagar four-lane highway is now moving quickly. Work is actively happening on two main parts of the road. One part is the 19-km stretch from Agrahara in Srirangapatna to Yalachanahalli in Mysuru taluk. The other part is the 24.10-km stretch from Belthur in Hunsur to Harave Mallarajapattana in Periyapatna.
However, the project has slowed down on the 22-km stretch between Kushalnagar and Madikeri. Environmental activists have raised concerns, and legal issues have stopped work on this part. Because of this, the road will be built only up to Kushalnagar, according to former MP Prathap Simha.
In addition, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has said that the new route will start from Guddehosur near Kushalnagar and connect to NH-275 near Srirangapatna, making travel faster from Bengaluru to Kushalnagar. The road will also include bypasses at Periyapatna and Kushalnagar to avoid traffic jams in busy areas.
This new highway will also help heavy commercial vehicles like tippers, trailers, and trucks move more smoothly. Since the route mainly goes through dry and farming lands, it avoids major social and environmental problems. This is good news for logistics companies, especially those moving goods between Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Coorg.
The highway plan started in 2018 when former MP Prathap Simha got it approved by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Later, on March 12, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the Bhoomi puja near Gejjalagere during the launch of the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, giving the project new energy.
