A new expressway in Mumbai has been approved to speed up and smooth travel. The Union Cabinet has given the green signal for this 29-kilometre six-lane road, which will connect Pagote in the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) area to Chouk. The road will also link the old Mumbai-Pune highway and Karjat road, making it easier to travel between the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH-66). With an investment of over Rs 4,500 crore, this project will boost transport and improve connectivity in the region.
This expressway will provide a direct connection between JNPA and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. It is part of the PM GatiShakti national master plan and will help improve transport in key economic areas. The expressway will be developed under a build, operate, and transfer model, meaning a private company will construct and maintain it before handing it over to the government.
At present, the roads connecting JNPA to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway are often crowded. Heavy traffic in areas like Palaspe Phata, D-Point, Kalamboli Junction, and Panvel causes long delays, with vehicles taking up to three hours to pass through. Since nearly 180,000 vehicles use these roads daily, the new expressway will provide a quicker and smoother route, cutting down traffic congestion.
Two tunnels under the Sahayadri mountains are planned for the expressway to further smooth travel. The tunnels would enable the driver to bypass dangerous and hilly ghat roads, making travel safer and faster. This would benefit heavy and commercial vehicles the most, as they have difficulties with the harsh mountain terrain. The tunnels will also reduce the frequency of accidents in this zone.
JNPA handles a large amount of container traffic daily, and with the new Navi Mumbai International Airport, the need for transportation will increase. This expressway will facilitate faster goods travel and more efficient trade. Businesses will enjoy quicker delivery times, and trade in the area as a whole will be enhanced.
This expressway will facilitate economic development in Mumbai and Pune by cutting down travel time and improving road safety. Travelers will have smoother rides, and companies will be able to move goods more conveniently.
