Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that the long-stalled Mumbai-Goa highway project will be fully completed by June 2025. Speaking at an event in Mumbai on 14 April, the minister assured citizens that all delays and disputes surrounding the project have now been resolved.
“There were numerous difficulties with the Mumbai-Goa highway. But do not worry, we will complete the road 100 per cent by this June,” Gadkari said, as reported by PTI.
The Mumbai-Goa highway is a key infrastructure project expected to significantly reduce travel time and boost connectivity between Maharashtra’s capital and the coastal state of Goa. However, the project faced major hurdles including litigation, familial land disputes, and complex compensation procedures.
“There were fights among brothers, cases in courts, and endless complications in providing compensation for land. But those issues have now been resolved,” Gadkari said. He added that the project has gained strong momentum in recent months.
While addressing the crowd, Gadkari admitted that the Mumbai-Goa and Delhi-Jaipur highways have been among the most challenging projects in his ministry’s portfolio.
“Delhi-Jaipur and Mumbai-Goa (highways) are among the black spots in our department. They come with many difficulties. If I were to speak the truth about Konkan, people would not accept it,” he remarked.
Gadkari also announced that the government will soon eliminate physical toll booths and introduce a fully automated, satellite-based toll collection system.
“The central government will soon introduce a new toll policy. I will not speak much about it now, but within the next 15 days, a new policy will be announced,” he stated.
The upcoming system will use satellite tracking and automatic number plate recognition to deduct toll charges directly from vehicle owners’ bank accounts, streamlining the process and reducing congestion at toll plazas.
Gadkari concluded with a forward-looking statement on India's infrastructure ambitions. “In the next two years, India's road infrastructure will be better than that of the United States,” he said.
With the completion of high-impact projects like the Mumbai-Goa highway and the introduction of innovative toll reforms, India is clearly pushing ahead with a modern and efficient transportation ecosystem that aligns with global standards.
