The central government has approved a major new road project in Maharashtra. This ₹4,500 crore greenfield highway will connect the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Pagote to Chowk. The 29.2 km six-lane highway is being developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model to improve cargo movement in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Right now, trucks from JNPA take 2 to 3 hours to reach NH-48 and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The current route through Kalamboli and Palaspe is too crowded, with nearly 1.8 lakh vehicles using it daily. This causes delays and more fuel use. The new highway will reduce travel time, traffic jams, and pollution. It will also support better freight movement and save costs for transport companies.
The road will also pass through areas set for industrial growth, bringing jobs in logistics and warehousing. Urban planners say the project will help reduce traffic in city areas like Panvel and Kalamboli. It is designed to have minimal environmental impact and will support India’s goal for low-carbon growth.
While the project is approved, construction dates and land details are yet to be shared. NHAI has promised smooth execution with minimal disruption. Stay tuned for more Mumbai greenfield highway news updates.
