A significant step has been taken in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project: the completion of a 260-meter-long pre-stressed concrete (PSC) bridge. This newly built bridge is located over the under-construction National Expressway-4 near Kosamba in Gujarat’s Surat district. Construction was completed on February 22, 2025.
This is the fifth PSC bridge built for the bullet train project. The structure consists of 104 precast segments and spans four sections: 50 meters, 80 meters, 80 meters, and 50 meters. Engineers used the balanced cantilever method, which is best for large spans and ensures structural stability.
The bridge is positioned between the Surat and Bharuch Bullet Train stations. It will allow the high-speed train to cross over National Expressway-4, which is currently under construction to connect Delhi and Mumbai through Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The construction was carefully planned to ensure the safety of workers and travellers. Engineers also worked to maintain smooth traffic movement on the expressway and reduce any inconvenience to the public.
The government plans to start partial operations of the bullet train between Surat and Bilimora in 2026. The entire 508-km route will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad using Japan’s advanced Shinkansen technology. Once completed, passengers will be able to travel between the two cities in just 3 to 3.5 hours. This project, launched in 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, is expected to transform rail travel in India.
