The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet on Wednesday approved a Rs. 2,312 crore four-lane highway project between Ujjain and Indore, officials announced.
The project includes a 19.815 km Ujjain Simhastha bypass, costing over Rs. 700 crore, according to an official.
It also features two other roads: the Rs. 1,370 crore Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Road and the Rs. 239 crore Indore-Depalpur Road.
The Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation will develop all the proposed roads, the official stated.
The state government is preparing for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, a massive Hindu congregation that happens every 12 years in Ujjain. Millions of devotees from across India and abroad are expected to visit the holy city for this event.
Elaborate arrangements will be made along the Kshipra river for the 13 Akharas of saints and seers to take their holy dip.
The government estimates that over 10 crore people will attend the Simhastha Mela in Ujjain. Indore will be the nearest airport for Simhastha Mela visitors. The state government has started improving connectivity between the two major cities, Indore and Ujjain.
Last month, the Cabinet led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav gave in-principle approval for a Metro train project connecting Indore and Ujjain.
The project will feature two Metro rail corridors: one connecting Indore to Ujjain and another linking Indore to Pithampur.
In the first phase, the Metro will connect Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain to Lavkush Chauraha in Indore via Nanakheda Bus Stand.
The state government also plans a rapid rail transit system between Indore and Ujjain with a separate track. Additionally, railway routes are being strengthened.
Plans have been announced to enhance Ashrams and Dharamshalas in Ujjain for saints and seers, modeled after Haridwar.
