On Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the $15 billion Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, being developed in collaboration with Japan, will become operational by 2028. He also shared that the state plans to raise $50 billion from international financiers over the next four months for infrastructure development.
Fadnavis acknowledged that while the project faced delays during the two years of administrative changes till 2022, it is now progressing rapidly. The high-speed rail project is expected to mark a transformative shift in India's transport landscape.
Speaking at an event on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), Fadnavis emphasized that infrastructure development is essential to achieving Maharashtra’s goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy.
He highlighted that $30 billion had already been invested in infrastructure during his first term as Chief Minister (2014–2019), and the momentum has since accelerated. The Vadhavan port, a key maritime project, is being developed with a modern airport and bullet train station to boost global connectivity.
Recently, Vivek Kumar Gupta, Managing Director of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), led a high-level inspection of the bullet train project.
A team of directors, contractors, consultants, and senior officials conducted a two-day inspection of key construction sites and ensured compliance with safety and quality standards. Bullet train station developments at Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati, along with track-laying progress, were closely reviewed.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated, “Infrastructure development is not just an investment in physical assets, but in the state’s economic future. The bullet train and port projects will revolutionize how Maharashtra connects with the rest of the country and the world.”
He also added, “While we lost some time during the previous administration, we are now moving at full speed. The vision is clear, and the execution is being closely monitored.”
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train and the Vadhavan port are part of Maharashtra’s broader push to create globally competitive infrastructure. With focused leadership, large-scale investments, and international collaboration, Maharashtra aims to lead India’s growth in transportation, logistics, and economic development.
