Mahakumbh 2025: Massive Infrastructure Overhaul Underway in Prayagraj

A Transformational Leap in Public Infrastructure for the World’s Largest Gathering

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Uttar Pradesh Government is executing an ambitious infrastructure plan for Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. Scheduled from January 13 to February 26, the 45-day spiritual event is expected to host over 40 crore devotees, making it one of the largest human congregations on the planet. From road upgrades and bridge construction to digital services and sustainable practices, the state aims to ensure a safe, seamless, and spiritually rich experience.

Key Highlights of Mahakumbh 2025 Infrastructure Development

The state is building a temporary yet fully functional urban ecosystem equipped with modern amenities to handle unprecedented footfall.

• Roads and Beautification:
  92 roads are being renovated and 17 major roads beautified to improve traffic flow and access to key locations.
• Pontoon Bridges:
  30 pontoon bridges using 3,308 pontoons are under construction, with 28 already completed for smooth river crossings.
• Wayfinding Signage:
  Over 800 multilingual (Hindi, English, and regional languages) signages are being installed for navigation; 400+ are already in place.
• Pathway Infrastructure:
  2,69,000 checkered plates have been laid across the Mela zone to facilitate smooth pedestrian movement.
• Temporary City (Mahakumbh Nagar):
  Thousands of tents and super deluxe shelters, including IRCTC’s luxury tent city “Mahakumbh Gram,” are being set up with modern facilities.

Smart Surveillance and Disaster Preparedness

To ensure crowd control and public safety during the mega event, cutting-edge surveillance and emergency technologies are being deployed:

• AI-Powered Monitoring:
  2,700 CCTV cameras with AI features, along with 340+ surveillance experts, will monitor crowd density in real-time.
• Facial Recognition & Drones:
  Facial recognition tech will be used at entry points. Drones and underwater drones will assist in aerial and aquatic surveillance.
• Fire and Disaster Safety:
  ₹131.48 crore has been allocated to fire safety, including 4 high-tech Articulating Water Towers (AWTs). A multi-disaster response vehicle has been deployed, capable of rescuing people from collapsed structures and moving heavy debris.
• Cybersecurity Setup:
  56 cyber warriors and cyber help desks will be operational to counter digital threats and ensure safe connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the event's significance, stating, “This is a kind of Triveni — NRI Day, Mahakumbh, and Republic Day. It’s a great opportunity to connect with India’s development and heritage.”

Government officials further stressed that the infrastructure push at Mahakumbh 2025 is not just for managing crowds but to set a national benchmark for large-scale event infrastructure.
