PWD to Build Six-Lane Flyover in North Delhi to Ease Civil Lines Traffic

Enhancing Road Infrastructure and Reducing Congestion

The Public Works Department (PWD) will soon begin work on a six-lane flyover near the Civil Lines Trauma Centre and DRDO in North Delhi. This infrastructure project is aimed at addressing long-standing congestion issues at the Civil Lines–Metcalf House T-junction and improving traffic movement towards the Vidhan Sabha and Outer Ring Road.

With a budget of ₹183 crore, the new flyover is part of an ongoing effort to modernize urban roadways and ensure smoother intra-city and inter-state vehicular flow, especially towards key northern routes connecting Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

Key Highlights of the Project

  • Six-lane flyover planned near Civil Lines Trauma Centre and DRDO.
  • Total estimated cost: ₹183 crore.
  • Designed to ease congestion at Civil Lines–Metcalf House T-junction.
  • Flyover to span 680 metres with no signalised intersections.
  • Road widening and drainage system upgrades included.
  • Safe pedestrian walkways to be built on both sides.
  • U-turns planned for better local traffic circulation.
  • Project will support smoother interstate connectivity.

Focus on Traffic Decongestion and Urban Mobility

The Metcalf House T-junction has become a pressure point for vehicular movement due to merging traffic from multiple directions and prolonged signal wait times. This often results in long vehicle queues extending towards Salimgarh Fort and Signature Bridge.

After detailed site analysis, PWD engineers concluded that a signal-free corridor via a new flyover would be the most effective long-term solution to decongest the area.

The flyover will not only reduce travel time but also ensure continuous traffic movement without breaks at signals. This is expected to reduce bottlenecks and increase the carrying capacity of the corridor.

Statement from PWD Minister

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said,“This flyover is a major step towards building a modern, efficient, and commuter-friendly road network in the capital. Our goal is to improve travel time, reduce stress on arterial roads and ensure better mobility across the city.”

Infrastructure Features and User Benefits

The project includes several commuter-friendly elements:

  • Pedestrian Infrastructure: Safe, dedicated walkways on both sides of the flyover.
  • Drainage Management: A new drainage system to prevent waterlogging during monsoons.
  • Local Connectivity: Integrated U-turns to minimize detours and support local vehicular flow.
  • Emergency Access: Improved passage for ambulances heading to nearby hospitals, including the Civil Lines Trauma Centre.

Expansion of Ongoing Urban Mobility Projects

This flyover is one of several infrastructure upgrades underway across Delhi. Another major flyover project, planned near Savitri Cinema, is being revived to ease traffic around Nehru Place and Okhla. The earlier proposal, conceptualized in 2016, is now moving forward with clearances already in place.

Additionally, PWD is planning underpasses at two highly congested junctions:

  • Peeragarhi Chowk (West Delhi): A key node on Outer Ring Road, often congested due to heavy cross-city and inter-state movement.
  • Andheria Mor (South Delhi): Serves traffic heading toward IGI Airport, Gurgaon, and Qutub Minar; faces regular bottlenecks due to narrow roads and nearby encroachments.

Towards a Smoother and Safer Commute

PWD’s current infrastructure upgrades are part of a long-term strategy to enhance road capacity, remove bottlenecks, and create more efficient transport corridors. These improvements will help reduce travel delays, ensure better road safety, and improve overall mobility in Delhi’s rapidly growing urban environment.
