The Public Works Department (PWD) will soon begin work on a six-lane flyover near the Civil Lines Trauma Centre and DRDO in North Delhi. This infrastructure project is aimed at addressing long-standing congestion issues at the Civil Lines–Metcalf House T-junction and improving traffic movement towards the Vidhan Sabha and Outer Ring Road.
With a budget of ₹183 crore, the new flyover is part of an ongoing effort to modernize urban roadways and ensure smoother intra-city and inter-state vehicular flow, especially towards key northern routes connecting Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
The Metcalf House T-junction has become a pressure point for vehicular movement due to merging traffic from multiple directions and prolonged signal wait times. This often results in long vehicle queues extending towards Salimgarh Fort and Signature Bridge.
After detailed site analysis, PWD engineers concluded that a signal-free corridor via a new flyover would be the most effective long-term solution to decongest the area.
The flyover will not only reduce travel time but also ensure continuous traffic movement without breaks at signals. This is expected to reduce bottlenecks and increase the carrying capacity of the corridor.
PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said,“This flyover is a major step towards building a modern, efficient, and commuter-friendly road network in the capital. Our goal is to improve travel time, reduce stress on arterial roads and ensure better mobility across the city.”
The project includes several commuter-friendly elements:
This flyover is one of several infrastructure upgrades underway across Delhi. Another major flyover project, planned near Savitri Cinema, is being revived to ease traffic around Nehru Place and Okhla. The earlier proposal, conceptualized in 2016, is now moving forward with clearances already in place.
Additionally, PWD is planning underpasses at two highly congested junctions:
PWD’s current infrastructure upgrades are part of a long-term strategy to enhance road capacity, remove bottlenecks, and create more efficient transport corridors. These improvements will help reduce travel delays, ensure better road safety, and improve overall mobility in Delhi’s rapidly growing urban environment.
