The much-awaited Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project in Karnataka is expected to receive the nod of the Union Cabinet shortly. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has assured Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy that the project will be cleared eventually.
Kumaraswamy, the then Chief Minister of Karnataka, visited Gadkari at his Parliament office in New Delhi to finalise the project's significance and development. In the meeting, Gadkari updated him that the project had already been approved by the Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC). This implies that the Union Cabinet's final nod is imminent.
The STRR project aims to link eight strategic industrial cities on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The road will be an expressway with 4-6 lanes connecting Dabaspet, Doddaballapura, Devanahalli, Sulibele, Hoskote, Anekal, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, and Magadi. It will also connect with the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, thereby simplifying traffic for cars going towards Hosur in Tamil Nadu.
Once finished, the project will also reduce Bengaluru's heavy traffic in its core areas. Several commercial vehicles will no longer be required to pass through the city, resulting in smooth traffic movement and less congestion. It will also benefit industries as it will give them a quick and efficient way of moving goods.
The 135-kilometer expressway, estimated to cost Rs 4,750 crore, will be constructed. It will also have controlled access, where vehicles can move in or out only at specified points. This will provide an unbroken traffic flow. The STRR will be a key industrial corridor that will facilitate trade and commerce and save time.
In addition to the STRR project, Kumaraswamy and Gadkari discussed the rapid execution of the Mandya Ring Road project. Kumaraswamy stated that the Mandya Urban Development Authority had already finalised a Detailed Project Report (DPR). However, he noted that the estimated budget was not sufficient and sought an escalation to Rs 900 crore, which Gadkari agreed to.
Another important topic of discussion was upgrading the national highway that runs through the Melukote Assembly Constituency. The proposal is to widen the road from two to four lanes. Other issues included constructing a truckway close to Pandavapura Railway Station and accelerating the completion of different highway projects in Karnataka.
With the STRR project and other road developments underway in Karnataka, citizens will likely have more connected roads and fewer traffic congestion in the years ahead. The final approval from the Union Cabinet will soon be cleared, and the project, as work starts, will greatly benefit Bengaluru and the surrounding areas.
