Sohna, Haryana: India is set to complete its first 8-lane road tunnel, a major infrastructure milestone on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Located near Sohna in Haryana, the 4-km-long tunnel will be the country’s widest, enhancing connectivity and easing truck movement across northern and western India.
Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) confirmed that over 95% of the construction work has been completed. Final touches include installing lighting, ventilation, and fire safety systems. Trial runs are expected to begin in the coming weeks.
“This tunnel is a key part of the expressway and reflects India’s progress in modern highway infrastructure,” an NHAI spokesperson stated.
The tunnel passes through the Aravalli hills and has been constructed with minimal ecological disruption. It is equipped with real-time monitoring, fire detection systems, and emergency exits. Once operational, it will offer smooth passage for high-speed vehicles and commercial trucks.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will reduce travel time between the two cities from 24 to 12 hours. Truckers and commercial carriers will benefit from faster deliveries, lower fuel consumption, and reduced road congestion.
The construction involved cutting-edge equipment, including automated boring machines and digital tools, which helped manage tough terrain and speed up development while reducing environmental impact.
This tunnel sets a new benchmark in India’s expressway development and is expected to significantly improve both passenger and freight movement on one of the country’s busiest economic corridors.
