The MoRTH is working to finish several important expressways by 2025, which will form the backbone of India's highway network. Over the past decade, the national highway network has increased to 56,700 kilometres. However, MoRTH now plans to upgrade the quality of construction and maintenance to ensure that all people on the roads are safer and more efficient in their travels.
Under the new projects to connect the country's length and breadth with highways, the length increased from 91,000 km in 2013-14 to 146,000 km under the new projects. Nevertheless, there is intense criticism related to highway quality, with several cases found, especially pertaining to NH 48, which extends from Delhi to Jaipur.
This corollary for Amritsar-Jamnagar seems highly quality-based due to V Umashankar, a high-profile newly nominated Highways secretary. The concern is being kept open by MoRTH, which is hoping to improve quality.
By 2025, several expressways will be completed. These are the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, and the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway. Once these happen, travelling would be faster, and there would be less congestion and a smoother journey.
MoRTH is now shifting from a project-based development approach to a corridor-based model. This change aims to achieve consistent quality, better logistics, and easier travel for users. A transport study has identified 50,000 km of high-speed highway corridors, and 4,827 km are expected to be ready by the end of this fiscal year.
MoRTH has proposed developing a multi-party interoperable system for barrier-free toll collection. This system, which uses satellite navigation, is expected to increase the speed of toll transactions and shorten travellers' waiting times.
Apart from road improvement, the government is also taking initiatives in India's maritime sector. Major projects include the construction of Vadhavan Port and the up-gradation of Kandla, Tuticorin, and Galathea Bay Transshipment Hub. These will strengthen India's maritime capabilities and improve its ports and shipping industry.
MoRTH's project will radically transform India's transportation system, building growth and improving infrastructure for future generations in the direction of quality, transparency, and sustainability.
