After a decade of delays, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is poised to transform a key 2km arterial road that connects Naurangpur with Rampura Chowk on NH8. The road, which is critical for residents in sectors 78, 79, and 80, has long struggled with heavy traffic load and deteriorating conditions.
The GMDA has now proposed a Rs 41.8-crore redevelopment plan, which will be presented for discussion and approval at the upcoming Authority meeting. The road, previously managed by the Public Works Department, is now under GMDA's jurisdiction.
The road’s redevelopment has faced multiple setbacks over the years, including encroachments and administrative delays. However, a breakthrough occurred this March when Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) initiated a drive to remove illegal structures obstructing the road's alignment. GMDA has since demarcated the right of way, clearing the path for construction.
The urgency of revamping the road became clear as traffic volume surged with the growth of residential and commercial developments along NH-8. This road serves as a vital link not only for local residents but also for commercial vehicles traveling to areas like Tauru, Nuh, and parts of Rajasthan.
A senior GMDA official said, “We have prepared the proposal for upgrading this road and will submit it before the Authority next week. Once approved, we will initiate the tendering process promptly. The completed project will significantly improve connectivity in sectors 78-80.”
For residents like Dhirender Singh, a resident of Mapsko Mountville in Sector 79, the road’s redevelopment is long overdue. “The current traffic load far exceeds the road's capacity. It can't handle the volume of heavy trucks and trailers at its existing width. If that isn't enough, there are innumerable potholes to negotiate. Yes, there have been patchwork repairs, but they are already in tatters," he shared.
He added, "For us, this road is a lifeline, especially for accessing hospitals during emergencies. Residents on this side of the highway have long felt neglected. A basic civic need such as a road must definitely be in good condition.”
Residents are hopeful but have stressed the importance of timely project completion, ensuring that the road’s condition is addressed without further delays.
Once approved, the road’s redevelopment will address long-standing issues related to traffic congestion and road quality. The project aims to improve mobility for both residents and businesses in the area, ensuring a smoother commute along this crucial stretch of NH8.
The GMDA’s proactive steps and the removal of encroachments signal a positive direction for Gurugram's urban development, making it a potential model for similar infrastructure projects in other growing cities across India.
