Commuters and residents of Mohali will have to wait a little longer for the completion of the much-anticipated Greenfield Alignment Project. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a revised deadline of September 2025 for the project's completion, pushing it back from the earlier expected date of June 2025.
The Greenfield Alignment Project spans 31 kilometers. It will connect IT Chowk (PR-7), located near the Chandigarh International Airport, to the Kurali-Chandigarh road. This ambitious project is being constructed in an area that has remained largely undeveloped.
"Nearly 82% of the work has been completed and we can expect the project to be complete by September 2025." stated a senior NHAI official. This new route will be crucial for the smooth movement of truck traffic and other vehicles.
The NHAI initiated the Greenfield Project after deciding to scrap the 40-kilometer Kharar-Banur-Tepla road project in July 2019 due to its high cost. The primary objective of the Greenfield Alignment is to alleviate the increasing traffic congestion on the Airport Road in Mohali.
Upon completion, it is expected to serve as a crucial alternative route for traffic, particularly for those traveling from Delhi towards Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
The ₹1,400 crore Greenfield Project allocated ₹700 crore for compensating landowners and another ₹700 crore for construction. Land acquisition faced delays in 2021 due to landowner protests over initial compensation rates.
NHAI subsequently approved a four-fold increase, raising the minimum compensation from ₹24 lakh per acre to ₹1 crore - ₹1.09 crore per acre. Approximately 450 acres across 28 villages (21 in Kharar tehsil, 6 in Mohali tehsil) are being acquired, with the district revenue. Some officers overseeing the disbursement of the ₹700 crore compensation already released by NHAI..
Once operational, the Greenfield Alignment Project is poised to bring significant relief to the heavily congested Airport Road and surrounding areas. By providing a direct route for interstate traffic heading north, it will reduce the burden on the internal road networks of Chandigarh and Zirakpur.
