The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is planning to increase the mandatory use of precast concrete in road construction projects from the existing 25% to 75-80%. This move aims to reduce pollution, cut costs, and speed up project completion. The ministry is working with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to finalize the implementation plan.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has emphasized the benefits of precast concrete in construction. He discussed the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and stressed the need for wider adoption.
“We are working on making precast concrete mandatory up to 75-80%. It is the need of the hour as it helps reduce pollution and costs,” Gadkari stated at a recent event in Delhi.
According to the MoRTH, precast concrete offers multiple advantages:
The increased use of precast concrete is also expected to boost the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. Factory-produced precast elements like panels, girders, and barriers have been successfully used in major projects such as the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Many developed nations, including Belgium, Canada, and the USA, extensively use precast concrete in their infrastructure projects.
By increasing the use of precast concrete, the government aims to make road development faster, more cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable. The implementation of this policy will be a significant step toward modernizing India's road construction methods while ensuring long-term economic and environmental benefits.
