In response to India's growing infrastructure and rising demand for green energy, Godrej & Boyce has introduced the country's first lithium-ion battery-powered forklift trucks. This launch marks a significant step towards sustainability in the industrial sector. This innovative addition to the material handling sector features an indigenously developed Battery Management System (BMS). It marks a significant achievement for Indian manufacturing.
The new technology provides a self-reliant and secure lithium-ion battery system. It meets a crucial need in India’s material handling sector.
The benefits of lithium-ion technology are vast. These batteries offer over four times the lifespan of traditional lead-acid batteries. Li-ion batteries provide up to 5,000 charge cycles compared to just 1,200 for lead-acid alternatives, leading to a lower long-term investment. They also allow opportunity charging, reduce maintenance needs, and emit zero emissions during charging.
Additionally, lithium-ion batteries require only 2.5 hours to charge from 20% to 80%, while lead-acid batteries need 6 hours. They consume 30% less energy and provide 15% more runtime to 2 and 3-tonne forklifts. The modular design of the batteries also allows scalability, making them adaptable to various industrial needs.
Godrej & Boyce plans to extend this lithium-ion technology to other material handling equipment. Industries such as automotive, FMCG, consumer durables, retail (including e-commerce), and pharmaceuticals are expected to benefit from this advancement.
Anil Verma, Executive Director & CEO of Godrej & Boyce, emphasized the growing importance of India’s logistics sector. “India’s logistics sector is at a pivotal juncture, driven by infrastructure developments in sectors like automotive, FMCG, and e-commerce," he said. “At Godrej & Boyce, we are committed to the 'Make in India' strategy, contributing to this growth through cutting-edge, technology-enabled solutions. These innovations are essential for improving operational efficiency and shaping the future of India’s logistics industry.”
Anil Lingayat, Executive Vice President & Business Head of the Material Handling Business at Godrej & Boyce, highlighted the significance of the new launch. “We are proud to introduce our lithium-ion powered forklifts with a locally developed Battery Management System,” he stated. “This launch reinforces our commitment to ‘Make in India’ and self-reliant capabilities in critical technologies. Our solution enhances safety and performance, marking the beginning of a transformative journey in material handling across India.”
The lithium-ion battery systems were developed in partnership with Log9 Materials. They integrate locally produced lithium-ion cells, with 30% of the production currently localized. Godrej & Boyce aims to achieve 100% localization by next year.
Historically, India has relied heavily on imported batteries and BMS systems, mostly from China. By localizing this technology, Godrej & Boyce underscores its dedication to the “Make in India” vision and its commitment to building a resilient domestic supply chain.
