The ₹15,000 crore ring road project in Goa was planned to facilitate the passage of heavy commercial vehicles through the state without contributing to traffic congestion. This road would let trucks and goods vehicles from other states travel through Goa without entering the busy city roads.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari approved the project in December 2022, following a request from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. However, the plan has now hit a roadblock.
The reason for the delay is that 40km of the existing highway expansion is still incomplete. The four- and six-laning work of highways in Goa started in 2016. But even after nine years, work is still pending in areas like Cuncolim, Canacona, Bhoma, and Ponda.
According to officials, there is no fixed deadline to complete this work. The road widening plan was based on future traffic needs until 2030. However, with parts of the highway yet to begin construction, the ring road project cannot move ahead.
Officials from the ministry have clearly said that the ring road project cannot proceed until the remaining 40km is completed. This puts a big pause on Goa’s traffic solution plan. Now, the state must first complete the highway work before expecting progress on the ring road project.
