Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday that Bihar has around ₹3.88 lakh crore worth of planned road infrastructure projects. The Centre aims to complete road works worth nearly ₹5 lakh crore in the state during the current term.
Speaking at the Rising Bihar Investor Summit 2026, Mr Gadkari detailed completed, ongoing and proposed highway, expressway and greenfield corridor projects. He said the growing road network could improve connectivity, attract investment, support industrial activity and generate employment.
Road projects covering around 2,910 km have already been completed in Bihar, involving nearly ₹33,000 crore in expenditure. Another 1,878 km of projects are currently under construction, with an investment of about ₹65,100 crore.
Proposed projects cover an estimated investment of nearly ₹3.25 lakh crore. Mr Gadkari said Bihar's national highway network has expanded from around 4,615 km in 2014 to nearly 6,500 km.
The minister highlighted the Ram-Janki Marg as a key connectivity project. The approximately 440-km project has an estimated cost of ₹5,440 crore and connects important religious and tourism destinations.
Around 27% of the work has been completed. Mr Gadkari said the project is targeted for completion by November 2028.
Projects worth around ₹22,000 crore are also being developed under a corridor linked to sites associated with Lord Buddha. Around 90% of the work has been completed, he said.
The proposed Gorakhpur-Siliguri High-Speed Corridor is estimated to cost around ₹72,000 crore. Bihar is expected to receive approximately ₹52,000 crore of the investment.
The corridor will span around 526 km, including nearly 410 km through Bihar. Mr Gadkari said its greenfield alignment has received approval, while notification for land acquisition has been issued.
Another greenfield project spanning around 400 km has received in-principle alignment approval. The Patna-Purnea Greenfield Expressway proposal has also been sent for Cabinet approval.
The Buxar-Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor will extend around 218 km. It carries an estimated cost of ₹10,000 crore and will include both brownfield and greenfield stretches.
A proposal for the approximately 13.4-km Anisabad-Digarganj project in Patna has also been submitted to the Cabinet. The project is estimated to cost around ₹8,500 crore.
Mr Gadkari also highlighted the Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Corridor as a major connectivity project for Bihar and eastern India. The corridor spans nearly 600 km and has an estimated cost of around ₹32,000 crore.
Around 35% of the work has been completed. Once finished, the corridor is expected to cut travel time between Varanasi and Kolkata.
It will also improve connectivity between Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
The proposed Raxaul-Haldia Corridor will cover around 550 km and cost an estimated ₹45,200 crore. Nearly 400 km of the corridor will pass through Bihar, involving about ₹26,000 crore in proposed investment.
Mr Gadkari said the detailed project report is expected to be completed by December. The project could reduce travel time between Raxaul and Haldia from around 20 hours to about eight hours.
The Patna Ring Road project spans around 162 km and has an estimated cost of ₹10,200 crore. It is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity around the state capital.
Mr Gadkari said the ring road will also improve access to Darbhanga airport. Its completion is expected to cut travel time around Patna and ease pressure on existing roads.
Mr Gadkari said highways, expressways and greenfield corridors could lower logistics costs and travel time. They could also improve access to markets and economic centres.
He added that expanded connectivity could support investment, industrial development, trade and employment generation.
