Delhi's Dwarka Expressway Becomes India’s First Smart Highway with AI-Powered Traffic System

India takes a big leap in digital traffic management with the launch of ATMS on Dwarka Expressway

New Delhi: In a historic move towards smarter and safer roads, India has launched its first AI-based Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on Dwarka Expressway. This advanced system follows NHAI’s 2023 guidelines and aims to ease traffic, prevent accidents, and upgrade road infrastructure.

AI Brings Smart Traffic to Life

The ATMS project has been implemented across 56.46 km, including 28.46 km of the Dwarka Expressway and the remaining stretch on NH-48 from Shiv Murti to Kherki Daula. Developed by IHMCL (Indian Highways Management Company Ltd) and executed by NHAI, this system turns a key national corridor into a next-generation digital highway.

Official Statement: ATMS to Detect Violations & Save Lives

Amrit Singha, Chief Product Officer of IHMCL, shared,” The ATMS is built with advanced components like traffic monitoring cameras, video incident detection, and enforcement systems. It helps us detect over 14 types of traffic violations such as overspeeding, no seatbelt, and triple riding. These violations are punishable under the Motor Vehicle Act.”

He also added, “We are using technology not just for law enforcement, but also for spreading road safety awareness among all road users. Our goal is to make roads safer using innovation.”

Smart Command Centre & Safety Features

The ATMS includes a Central Control Room, 110 high-resolution PTZ cameras at 1-km intervals, Variable Message Signboards (VMS), Vehicle Actuated Speed Display (VASD), and a Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System (VIDES). The system connects with the NIC E-challan portal for sharing real-time violation data with the police.

Boosting Road Safety for All Vehicles

This system ensures that infrastructure vehicles like trucks benefit from smoother traffic flow, faster emergency response, and fewer road obstructions. The smart features help avoid long halts, reduce accident risks, and allow for safer goods transport across the expressway.

Recognised as a national model for AI-powered traffic governance, the ATMS is set to transform Indian highways into safer, faster, and smarter corridors for all—passenger vehicles and trucks alike.
