The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, one of the biggest road projects in the country, is moving ahead quickly. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), 1,156 km of the total 1,386 km has been completed. Out of this, 756 km is already open for public use.
As per MoRTH’s update in the Rajya Sabha, the expressway's physical progress had reached 82% as of June 2024. This shows that the project is on track, although there have been a few delays in some parts.
Last month, work in five packages covering 140 km between Surat and the Gujarat-Maharashtra border faced delays. These delays happened due to slow work by some contractors, problems in land acquisition, and some unexpected events. However, the ministry said that all efforts are being made to finish the remaining part on time.
Once completed, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will become India’s longest expressway. Even now, with 756 km already operational, it is longer than any other expressway in the country.
This new eight-lane expressway will pass through Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. It is built for a top speed of 120 km/hr and can be expanded to 12 lanes in the future.
The expressway is expected to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai from around 24 hours to just 12 hours. In addition, it will offer a smoother and faster route compared to the current NH-48, which is longer and often busy with traffic.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 1 lakh crore. The final cost will be known after the remaining construction work is completed.
