Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that infrastructure projects worth over ₹1.25 lakh crore are either underway or planned to begin soon in the national capital. These projects, being undertaken with the support of the Central Government and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aim to ease traffic congestion and reduce pollution in the city.
The announcement was made during a meeting held at the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
CM Rekha Gupta outlined several major initiatives aimed at improving traffic flow across Delhi. A 7-kilometre underground tunnel will be constructed from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road. Additionally, an elevated road from INA to the airport, which will later extend to Gurgaon and Faridabad, is also planned.
New highways linking Delhi to Katra, Amritsar, and Dehradun are on the roadmap. The Delhi-Dehradun highway will bypass central Delhi by connecting Alipur to Tronica City, benefiting travellers from Haryana to Noida and easing urban traffic.
She also revealed plans for a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to Indira Gandhi International Airport, aiming to reduce congestion on existing roads.
Several key roads in Delhi—including Rohtak Road, Nangloi, Ashram, Badarpur, and MJ Road—have been taken over by the NHAI and will soon be made signal-free. Gupta stated that this step will significantly enhance traffic flow in these high-density areas.
Moreover, NHAI and PWD will jointly work on improving the drainage system along these roads. This move is expected to permanently address long-standing waterlogging issues caused by overlapping responsibilities of multiple civic agencies.
To further strengthen the road infrastructure, Gupta shared that an additional ₹150 crore has been approved for the construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs), which are vital for smooth traffic movement and reducing wait times at railway crossings.
Speaking at the press conference, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said, “I want to thank the Central Government and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for the massive support given to Delhi through several important road and infrastructure projects. With ₹35,000 crore worth of projects currently under construction and another ₹64,000 crore already completed, we’re seeing a true transformation. Soon, ₹24,000 crore worth of new projects will also begin.”
She added, “These combined efforts—worth over ₹1.25 lakh crore—are not just about roads. They are about building a modern, clean, and green capital city. With better roads, fewer traffic jams, and less pollution, we’re taking a giant leap towards making Delhi a world-class capital.”
The Delhi government, with full support from the Centre and NHAI, is accelerating the capital’s transformation through better roads, modern highways, and improved connectivity. With these upcoming developments, the city is expected to witness a major shift in traffic patterns, air quality, and overall infrastructure quality.
The focus on connectivity to neighbouring states, signal-free routes, and tunnels will significantly reduce travel time while also improving environmental conditions. This initiative reinforces the vision of turning Delhi into a world-class, future-ready urban hub.
