Traffic congestion at Sreekaryam junction will soon be over. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has inaugurated the construction of a much-needed flyover, which is expected to reduce traffic in one of the city's busiest areas.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Vijayan emphasised that the flyover project is designed with the upcoming light metro project in mind. The light metro is one of the key developments planned for the city’s future. The final design of the light metro is currently being prepared.
The Chief Minister said such projects are essential for the state’s growth and stressed the importance of ensuring that everyone benefits from development. He said the state’s growth must keep up with the times.
The flyover project is funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) and is estimated to cost ₹177 crore, including land acquisition expenses. The flyover will be 535 meters long and 7.5 meters wide. On both sides, there will be 5.5-meter-wide service roads and 1.5-meter-wide footpaths. The construction work is expected to be completed in 18 months.
Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, who presided over the event, highlighted the government's commitment to infrastructure development. He mentioned that since coming to power in 2021, the government had focused on bridge projects. The goal was to complete 100 bridge works in five years. However, the state managed to finish these works in just three and a quarter years.
The inauguration of the flyover construction was originally scheduled for January 1. However, it was postponed due to the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is responsible for the light metro rail project. Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd, based in Kochi, is the contractor for the flyover project. As part of the flyover project, 168 buildings were demolished, and 1.34 hectares of land were acquired from 168 private parties in the villages of Cheruvakkal, Ulloor, and Pangappara.
