Combilift and the Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) commemorated the 10th anniversary of their OEM Engineering Traineeship. The event brought together past graduates, current trainees, and local educators to reflect on a decade of impactful collaboration.
Launched in 2015, the nine-month traineeship addresses the skills gap in engineering and manufacturing through a blend of 26 weeks of classroom instruction at Monaghan Institute. Additionally, it also needed 12 weeks of hands-on experience at Combilift. To date, over 150 participants have completed the program, earning a QQI Level 5 qualification, with job placement rates exceeding 80%.
Combilift Managing Director Martin McVicar stated, “We wanted to create more than just a training program—we wanted to build a pathway into meaningful careers.” The program's curriculum has evolved to include modules in Hydraulics, Lean Manufacturing, and Mathematics, ensuring alignment with industry demands.
Sinead McKenna of CMETB emphasized, “We’ve created a flexible, forward-looking course that equips learners with in-demand skills and supports local industry at the same time.” CMETB plans to expand the program to include other regional employers starting in 2025.
The traineeship is fully funded by government and EU support, eliminating financial barriers for participants. Trainees receive a €300 weekly bursary during their practical placements and gain additional certifications, including a City & Guilds module in Hydraulics and a Lean Six Sigma White Belt.
Combilift’s handling tech supports the truck industries, making the traineeship highly relevant. Graduates are well-equipped to contribute to industries that depend on sophisticated commercial equipment and truck technologies.
