Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu – Prominent industry associations, including the Kongu Global Forum, SIEMA, and CODISSIA, have jointly raised concern over the delay in the Coimbatore Eastern Bypass project. They have formally appealed to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, to expedite the 81-kilometre infrastructure plan. This initiative is envisioned to connect six major national highways, thereby decongesting urban traffic and stimulating economic growth in Western Tamil Nadu.
Proposed in 2016 with a budget of ₹3,945.86 crore, the project is still awaiting NHAI executive committee approval. Despite the completion of a feasibility study in 2018, progress has been stalled for over four years.
Vanitha Mohan, Vice-Chairperson of the Kongu Global Forum, emphasized the project's potential to "completely change the land use pattern," fostering opportunities for various developments.
Mithun Ramdas, President of SIEMA, pointed out that Western Tamil Nadu contributed 30% to the state's GDP in the last fiscal year, with exports worth ₹1 lakh crore, advocating for infrastructure that supports this economic momentum.
The Coimbatore Eastern Bypass is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional connectivity and economic development. By facilitating the efficient movement of goods and reducing urban congestion, particularly for heavy vehicles, the project aligns with broader goals of sustainable infrastructure growth. Industry stakeholders urge the Union government to prioritise and fast-track the approval process, recognising the bypass's potential to transform Coimbatore's logistical landscape.
