A citywide road maintenance program in Hyderabad is set to begin with an estimated cost of Rs 3,825 crore. This program, known as Phase II of the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP), will cover major roads in the city over the next five years (2025–2030). The proposals for this program have already been submitted to the standing committee of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for approval.
The CRMP Phase II will involve multiple tasks to improve and maintain roads. These tasks include strengthening and re-carpeting main roads, supporting BT (bitumen) roads, and mechanically sweeping the streets. The program also focuses on keeping the roads green by maintaining greenery along CRMP stretches.
In addition to these, the program will include setting up Monsoon Emergency Teams to handle pothole repairs and water stagnation points during the rainy season. New works planned under Phase-II also include the construction and remodelling of stormwater drains (SWDs) on major roads. The maintenance of existing SWDs, including desilting and necessary repairs, will also be part of the program.
CRMP Phase II has been planned for both new and existing roads. The total length of roads covered by this phase is 1,142.54 kilometres. The projected cost for this phase is Rs 3,825 crore. The previous phase, CRMP Phase-I, covered 744.22 kilometres of roads for five years, with a budget of Rs 2,491 crore. The new proposal, once approved, will add 424 new stretches and 398.32 kilometres of roads to the existing network. This addition will require an additional Rs 1,334 crore in funding.
The proposals for CRMP Phase-II have been submitted to the standing committee of GHMC for approval. Once approved by the committee, the proposal will be discussed at the GHMC Council. Afterwards, it will be sent to the state government for final approval.
If the proposal is approved, work on the project will begin soon. The GHMC aims to ensure the roads remain in excellent condition throughout the program. Phase I of the CRMP was completed, which helped maintain the main roads in GHMC by keeping them pothole-free and ensuring proper upkeep of footpaths and central medians. In 2019, the state government gave administrative sanction for the maintenance of main roads in GHMC under CRMP Phase-I. The allocated budget for that phase was Rs 1,839 crore.
