Chennai is all set to get its first steel bridge, which will connect Thoraipakkam and Neelankarai in South Chennai. This bridge will be built over the Buckingham Canal and is expected to make travel easier for many residents. The design for the bridge is ready, and the Government of Tamil Nadu has approved a budget of Rs 35 crore for its construction. The bridge will be built at a height that allows boats to pass beneath it, ensuring smooth movement on the waterway.
This new bridge will help expand the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam radial road that starts from the GST Road. For those driving from the GST Road, the bridge will provide a direct route to the East Coast Road (ECR). According to an official from the Highways Department, the tender process is in the final stages, and construction is expected to start by the end of April. The entire project is likely to be completed in about 9 months.
Currently, there is no proper link road between Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and ECR from Thiruvanmiyur to Sholinganallur. As a result, many people find it difficult to travel, especially during rush hours. A resident from Thoraipakkam mentioned that heavy vehicles often use the old and narrow pedestrian bridges. This creates traffic jams as vehicles have to wait for their turn to cross. If the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) removes these old facilities without providing an alternative, the situation could become even worse.
However, building this bridge is not without challenges. A retired official from the Highways Department shared that the bridge can only be connected to the roads on both sides if the Revenue Department and the Water Resources Department (WRD) provide the required land. On the Thoraipakkam side, WRD will have to relocate residents of 43 houses. Meanwhile, on the Neelankarai side, the Revenue Department will need to compensate the residents of CLRI Nagar. The official believes that these issues will be resolved on time to ensure the bridge brings much-needed relief to the residents of OMR.
As of now, about 800 meters of the road on the OMR side has been completed. On the ECR side, another 600 meters of road still need to be built. The new steel bridge is expected to ease traffic and provide a faster route between Thoraipakkam and Neelankarai, benefiting daily commuters and reducing congestion on existing roads.
In conclusion, the construction of this steel bridge is a significant step towards improving the city's infrastructure and providing better connectivity for residents.
