The DMK government has extended full support to the ₹3,570 crore Port-Maduravoyal elevated expressway project. Public Works Department (PWD) Minister E V Velu confirmed that the state government has signed a “state support agreement” to ensure the smooth progress of the project.
The expressway project, which runs above the Cooum River for 15 km, faced delays due to issues raised by the Water Resources Department (WRD) and an order by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). As a result, construction work stopped for nearly three months during last year’s monsoon season.
However, Minister Velu said that despite these challenges, efforts to speed up the project are ongoing. He mentioned that review meetings are being held regularly with various departments, including NHAI, WRD, traffic police, Tangedco, Greater Chennai Corporation, and the Indian Navy.
So far, 812 out of 5,296 piles and 41 out of 882 pile caps have been built. In addition, work on the superstructures is underway at two separate casting yards, where 14 out of 9,415 units have been completed.
Although the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) gave the work order in November 2023, the actual site was handed over only in May 2024 due to WRD-related issues.
Perhaps to speed up the construction further, the government is planning to resettle people living along the riverbanks and shift power lines.
KMDK MLA E R Eswaran suggested naming the project after former CM M Karunanidhi. He also proposed expanding the project up to the Outer Ring Road from Poonamallee
