Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently announced a significant infrastructure development in Tamil Nadu. The government has approved a Rs 13.38 billion project to build an access-controlled highway along NH-40. This highway will span 28 km, connecting Walajapet/Ranipet to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border.
The new highway will feature a four-lane main carriageway with paved shoulders and two-lane service roads on both sides. This design aims to improve traffic flow for long-distance travelers and local commuters alike. Additionally, a 10-kilometer bypass around Walajapet and Ranipet will be constructed to ease congestion in these towns.
The project will enhance travel safety with the construction of four major bridges and two railway over-bridges. This access-controlled corridor will improve connectivity between Chennai and major cities such as Bengaluru, Tirupati, and Vellore.
Vellore, home to the renowned Christian Medical College (CMC), will benefit significantly from this highway, improving access for patients, visitors, and medical professionals. The highway is expected to boost regional trade, tourism, and economic growth.
Walajapet and Ranipet, known for their flourishing leather industry and small-scale engineering units, will also see growth in these sectors. The improved road infrastructure is expected to attract new investments and foster economic development, benefiting local industries such as those supplying components to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
This project is set to play a crucial role in enhancing the region's connectivity, safety, and economic prospects.
